AREAWIDE

Children can get free swimming lessons this summer at several YMCAs and six state parks.

The lessons are part of an initiative between the state Department of Environmental Protection and the Department of Children and Families to keep children safe. About 2,500 youths are expected to participate.

Free swimming lessons will be offered at six state parks: Burr Pond in Torrington; Rocky Neck in East Lyme; Sherwood Island in Westport; Silver Sands in Milford; Squantz Pond in New Fairfield; and Stratton Brook in Simsbury.

YMCAs in Bridgeport, Fairfield, Hartford, Meriden, Danbury, New Britain , New Haven, Stratford, Valley-Shore and Waterbury will also offer free swimming lessons.

Residents who want more information or to register can call a participating YMCA. For more information about summer safety and the free lessons, visit www.haveasafesummer.com.
